Here's a summary about the Freenode stuff that I thought was helpful. I don't know where this is all going to settle out, but I've registered #riemann and #jepsen over on irc.libera.chat. Will stick around on Freenode for a bit just in case. gist.github.com/joepie91/df80d

@aphyr I used to use irc a while ago, what tools would you recommend using these days to get a good UX from it (was thinking about going back to it)

Follow

@aphyr fair. My main issue these days is that I want a way to check for messages sent while offline and was wondering what the current approach to that was

@andysomniac (basically I keep an irssi process running on aphyr.com for years on end and just attach/detach via ssh/screen as needed)

@andysomniac @aphyr same except it's mosh+tmux+erc

mosh is a nice bonus because of the instant reconnect feature.

highly recommend!

@andysomniac The Lounge https://thelounge.chat/ is a pretty nice web-based IRC client - install it on a small VM and you can use it from anywhere

@adia Thanks for this recommendation, trying it out now and it seems good

@andysomniac @aphyr this may be an unpopular opinion, but i use an IRC bridge to my matrix server.

one client to install for irc/slack/discord/matrix/telegram that keeps all my chat history archived and searchable in one self hosted service.
